Maria Magdalena was assigned to the artist at birth, by her mother- as a patron and symbol of female lineage. The initiate has since become the avatar for Maria Kossak’s performative work. „As a female artist, I realize that my work and my physicality are canvas to the viewers imagination. What I may, or may not say will be perceived through the template of cultural conditioning.“ It is these templates; Kossak interrogates in performance, with the figure of Mary Magdalene serving as a bridge between religious, mythological and historical representations of womanhood and contemporary culture.
